NATIONAL EDUCATION POLICY 2020

Fulcrum of the entire learning process remains Teacher. So, if there is any compromise in selecting Teachers the entire NEP2020 will collapse. If there is any prejudice or bias in selecting Teachers NEP2020 will fail. If there is any interference from political masters or bureaucrats in selecting Teachers NEP2020 is bound to break down. If there is any undue consideration for caste, creed or religion in selecting Teachers NEP2020 will not reach its dream destination.

PLUS , MINUS and SUGGESTION with a WARNING

Warning : Fulcrum of the entire learning process remains Teacher.

Plus : There are few remarkable suggestions for implementation in NEP2020 such as :

  • To promote Indianness and Indian intellect in school curriculum
  • Comprehensive report cards covering apart from the leaners marks, their attitude and aptitude, their innovative thinking, their ability in sports and games and how they perform in vocational subjects. That is to have holistic 360* report cards for students
  • Setting up NPS (National Professional Standards) for continuous monitoring of Teachers
  • To arrest the “drop-outs” and to recognize and foster individual capabilities during the course period
  •  To utilize the services of eminent personalities and experts residing near the schools and arrange for lectures and inter-active sessions with them
  • Recognizing that the core of fundamental education is “Mathematics and Computational Thinking” and providing platform for the learners to excel in these.
  • To inter-act with local micro industries and make the students to have firsthand experience in such skills
  • Attract outstanding students to enter teaching profession
  • Removal of barriers amongst arts, science, curricular, vocational, social sciences, and humanities  and make the education multi-discipline
  • In  the higher education, introduction of subjects to educate the students about moral, ethical, National and historical values of  importance
  • Introduction of 1year/2year/3year B Ed courses  for different qualified sets of students
  • Formation of National/State  Schools Standards Authority for governing and supervising the skill sets of Teachers and Faculty members
  • To encourage formation of project based and topic central private clubs and circles all over the Nation which will interact and educate the talented learners and students from schools and colleges
  • To provide quality text books to the students at cost price
  • To give fillip to formation of higher education institutes in the field of Agricultural sciences and technology/ Agriculture Technology parks and attract more number of students to our “National life line sciences”

Minus : There are few debatable suggestions which might be harmful in the overall perspective:

  • To request/demand the private enterprises in printing business to provide quality books at cost price
  • To ask the institutions run by private trusts or individuals  to provide education at subsidized fees and keep the books of accounts relating to “fees and charges” transparent and available to the authorities
  • To allow institutes to develop their own curriculum (even if this is going to be only after) the year 2030
  • Exit options like allowing students to discontinue after first year in college with a certificate in Indian environment might not be a wise decision
  • Mention of “drop-outs” from 79.3% in 9th & 10th to  56.5% in 11th & 12th  does not give the complete picture. There are other streams of education like polytechnics, industrial training institutes (ITI), industrial schools and community colleges which are available for students who get through 10th exams and lakhs of students join such diploma/  certificate skill oriented courses every year.

Suggestions :  The following set of suggestion is given with a view to enhance the quality of NEP2020

  •  The education pattern in schools in NEP2020 is in three stages
  • Foundational stage
  • Middle stage
  • High stage

So it is suggested that we have infrastructure and buildings to cater to three levels of school

education like Foundation School, Middle School and High School

  • Ayurvedic and Siddha sciences can also be given importance like Agricultural sciences to develop infrastructure for attracting students from all over India to these disciplines
  • Recognised vocational skill development institutes and colleges  to be linked to nearby schools so that there is a seamless admission of students to these institutes and colleges
  • Teaching profession plays an important role in the development of a Nation and a gateway to be created to filter unworthy teachers who are spoiling the education environment now.
  • There is huge opportunity for job seekers in educational field like teachers of various languages, faculty members for skill development institutes and agricultural colleges, caterers for providing break-fast and noon-meals, doctors and nurses for health check-up for students and for faculty members for training teachers. These can be categorized and streamlined by a National agency

Main take-aways from NEP2020 are as follows:

  • Professional and good teachers will be employed without ‘consideration’ or compromise
  • Main thrust will be given to core subject “Mathematics and Computational Thinking”
  • Multi-disciplinary educational approach to make  education ‘lively’
  • Budding talent will be recognized and nurtured
  • Agricultural Science &Technology will be given importance
  • Skill Development is recognized as main thrust area
  • Moral and Ethical values will be imbibed in every learner/student at all levels

The entire National Education Policy- NEP2020 – seems to walk in the right direction
