Ministry of Defence yesterday announced a list of 101 items indicating timeline to shift from Imports to Local manufacturing under Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Considering various parameters one cannot but appreciate the initiative. However it is to be seen whether Bharath can start manufacturing the said items before the said timeline and get it approved.

Considering the time taken at present for approval various defence related items, we believe, the Industry & MSME Ministries must come out with policy measures that can make things easier for existing defence items manufacturers to cope up with the timeline.

We are also for identifying potential sub-assembly & component production that can be manufactured by Micro units in particular and Micro & Small units in general.

Preparation of such a road map and appropriate policy measures will help Micro & Small units to come out of red due to COVID 19. More over considering the fact Micro & Small scale sectors contribute major portion of both GDP and Employment, it will be a very good measure to support Micro & Small units.

There is a doubt whether Micro & Small units can meet the quality standards. We are only suggesting that the component & sub-assembly requirements to be earmarked for Micro & Small units. The quality control system can only be improved if the units are encouraged & educated.

Take the example of Maruti Udyog car company. It is a fact the the Japanese Car major Suzuki entered India through Maruti Udyog and they have certainly helped Indian Automotive Products & Components manufacturers to improve their quality standards. The manufacturing sector has witnessed a huge change only after the entry of Suzuki.

Similarly we should create an awareness and motivate the Micro & Small units to create a quality system that can help them in their other product too. We are sure Micro & Small units being the suppliers of components & sub-assembly, the final product manufacturers can still transfer the required quality standards to their vendors.

This is high time that the Government of India to look towards Micro& Small sector units in a more focused manner.
